20th Anniversary of 9/11

30 September 2021

On the 11th of September 2001, the entire world was stopped in its tracks by a terrorist attack in New York City. Both towers of the World Trade centre burst in flames and fell within an hour of each other, as the world watched in shock and horror. The Pentagon, a USA government building, was also hit while another plane, Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania. It is believed that it was aiming for the Capitol building, and that the passengers on board sacrificed their lives to save the lives of thousands of others.

20 years later in 2021, with America recently withdrawing all troops from Afghanistan, the families and friends of those killed in the attacks still mourn. This year, people gathered around the memorial site all day in New York, placing American flags and photographs on the engraved names of those killed. At night, the 88 searchlight beams lit up the sky and were seen from across the city to pay tribute to the 20 year anniversary. Biden addressed the US saying, "No matter how much time has passed, these commemorations bring everything painfully back as if you just got the news a few seconds ago." Even though 20 years have passed, individuals, whether American or not, still live with the memory of 9/11 every single day.
