The Duke of Edinburgh Award is the world’s leading achievement award for young people and is highly regarded by universities, colleges, and employers. It encourages young people to develop independence, commitment, leadership, and teamwork through being involved in a personalized program of activities.

The programs are at three progressive levels: Bronze, Silver, and gold. The award consists of voluntary work, skills, sports, and expeditions. Many year 10s have signed up this year as you need to be 14 to begin.. Amelia Dickens is a student in sixth form who is doing her gold award. She has previously done an expedition in the Pyrenees, which she says was very fun but it was also very challenging. On the 28th of October, Amelia will join her fellow award participants on the expedition trip to Uña in Cuenca for 4 days. On the 29th they are going to trek “via Ferrata” (which is a mountain route equipped with fixed ladders, cables, and bridges in order to be accessible to climbers and walkers) and on the 30th they will be doing a 7-hour walk. This is the first school trip since the pandemic and the participants are very excited and ready. Let’s all hope they have a fun time and that no one slips and hurts themselves…. hehe.
