European Union of Women

31 October 2021

A European Union of Women meeting took place at our school on the 19th October. Organized by Mrs. Alexander, the meeting hosted the International President of the organization, Margaret Hales, as well as two other members, a handful of students, Mrs. Bruce and Mrs. McClaren.

The European Union of Women was founded in September 1953 in Salzburg by Dr. Lola Solar. It is an organization that strives for the “strengthening of peace on the basis of justice and the free cooperation of peoples” through involving more women in the political and social debate and increasing female influence in all spheres of life. The EUW has sections in countries across Europe, including Austria, France, Germany, Norway, and Poland, as well as Great Britain.

During the meeting, the group discussed women’s rights in the modern world, and, specifically, how they are being helped or hindered by our school. A variety of issues were touched on, including the connotations of the word “feminism”, the importance of male inclusion in this conversation, and gendered uniforms at schools.

An international, co-ed school boasting of stunning views and facilities - a breeding ground for innovation and creativity - seems like the perfect setting to be a meeting place of the EUW. The students attending found it fascinating to speak with members of the Union about their experiences as women in different fields of employment, and offer their own opinions on the feminist movement. Both parties expressed an interest in continuing their relationship, so we look forward to future meetings with the European Union of Women.
