Twelfth Night

31 October 2021

On Saturday 23rd October, students gathered in The Garden to watch a live performance of ‘Twelfth Night’ by William Shakespeare performed at the Globe Theatre in London. The event was organized by Mrs Dickens and marked the first time that students at LES had the opportunity to watch a live-streamed performance at school.

Year 11 is currently studying ‘Twelfth Night’ in English Literature so this was a fantastic opportunity for them to see it live, as well as, of course, indulge in the Halloween sweets and popcorn that were on offer. The invitation was extended to Years 10, 12, 13 and anyone else interested in Theatre.

Directed by Sean Holmes, this timeless tale tells the story of two twins, Viola and Sebastian, each of whom believes that the other is dead. Viola disguises herself as a man, tangling the knot of misconceptions and disguises that this play is so famous for. Sean Holmes complicates the play further by having some originally male roles played by female actresses. Set in a fairground, the performance startles and intrigues its audience with its unique take on the play; the inclusion of modern musical hits, contemporary jokes and plenty of interaction between the audience and the actors.

It was an exciting and entertaining night for those who attended.
