Y11 Forensic Science

30 September 2021

On Tuesday the 14th of September, Mrs. Farquhar and Mrs. Shapiro organized a forensic crime scene for Year 11 Chemistry students.

The students were all given badges, bags to collect evidence, gloves, a lab coat, shoe covers and special paper for sketching the crime scenes.

The theatre was split into three areas; the lab, the crime scene and a space for collecting evidence. There was also an additional crime scene outside next to the gym.

The pupils formed groups of four and took turns circulating each stop. Each group carried out chemical tests in the lab. The students stayed on task during the triple period of chemistry and everyone seemed to enjoy it.

The purpose of such practices at school is to show the students the different future career paths they can pursue if interested in a certain subject.

Both Mrs Farquhar and Mrs Shapiro see this as a successful experiment and want to make it an annual practice.

The students saw it as an innovative approach to learning that was both fun and beneficial and are hoping to see similar experiences in other subjects.
